Firefighters battling a huge blaze at an industrial site in Shreveport, Louisiana.

News Summary

On March 15, 2025, a massive three-alarm fire erupted at the Pratt Industries recycling plant in Shreveport, Louisiana. Firefighters faced challenging conditions as winds intensified, leading to over 100 firefighters being mobilized to combat the blaze. While the cause remains under investigation, there were no reported injuries. The community rallied together to support the firefighting efforts, showcasing the strength of local collaboration.

Shreveport Firefighters Tackle Massive Blaze at Pratt Industries

In Shreveport, Louisiana, the local firefighting community was called to action on the afternoon of March 15, 2025, as a massive three-alarm fire erupted at the Pratt Industries recycling plant. Reports indicated that the fire started at approximately 4:25 p.m., with visible green flames lighting up the sky, drawing attention from those nearby.

Fire Breaks Out

It all started when a bale of compact paper and cardboard ignited, creating a stunning sight as fire crews rushed to the scene. At the outset, the Shreveport Fire Department dispatched 17 fire units to battle the blaze. However, as the situation intensified and winds picked up, the number of responding units swelled to 38 by 10 p.m., eventually topping 50 units as more firefighters joined the fight against the flames.

Challenges on the Frontline

The firefighters faced some tricky conditions. Strong winds made it harder to control the blaze, which was particularly concerning with an estimated 2.5 acres of compacted paper bales, weighing in at about 9,500 tons, up in flames. The fire was so expansive that over 100 firefighters, including off-duty personnel, were mobilized in a joint effort to extinguish the dangerous inferno.

Looking for Answers

As fire crews worked furiously to contain the flames, they also began investigating the cause of the fire. Efforts to obtain surveillance footage from the facility were underway, but as of the latest updates, the cause remained a mystery. Meanwhile, employees at Pratt Industries attempted to mitigate the situation using hoses from nearby water towers before the fire department arrived on the scene.

Keeping an Eye on the Situation

Fire Chief Clarence Reese and his team made strategic decisions as they continued to fight the fire. Given the intensity and unpredictability of the flames, there was discussion about possibly allowing the fire to burn itself out, while maintaining oversight for at least 48 hours. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries connected to the incident, which was a relief for both employees and the community.

Community Support

The Shreveport Fire Department did not tackle this challenge alone. Mutual aid was called in from neighboring fire districts, including Caddo Fire Districts 4, 5, and 6, as well as the Bossier City Fire Department. These collaborative efforts showcased the strong sense of community in Louisiana, as firefighters from various areas joined forces to combat the colossal fire.

A Look Ahead

Although some heat damage was reported to adjacent structures, officials indicated that it was not considered a total loss. The community’s resilience and the firefighters’ dedicated efforts played crucial roles in preventing a more significant disaster. As they monitor the blaze in the days ahead, Shreveport residents can take comfort in knowing their firefighters are standing tall, ensuring the safety and security of their community.
