Strong winds complicated firefighting efforts, which saw over 100 firefighters from various agencies responding to the blaze. Fortunately, the fire was contained by 6:24 p.m. and no injuries were reported. Investigations into the cause are currently underway as fire officials monitor the situation.
In a dramatic turn of events, the city of Shreveport found itself engulfed in smoke and flames on Saturday night when a massive {!! 3-alarm blaze erupted at the Pratt Industries recycling plant located in The Port of Shreveport/Bossier. The alarm rang out around 4:25 p.m., signaling a fierce fire consuming about 2.5 acres of compacted paper bales. Think about that: approximately 9,500 tons of paper were set ablaze, leading to a combustible scenario that had local firefighters scrambling.
Adding to the chaos, strong winds whipped through the area, complicating efforts to tame the fierce flames. With over 50 firefighting units stepping onto the scene as the sun began to set, the convergence of multiple agencies turned the block into a vital command center. Fire Chief Clarence Reese communicated that nearly 100 firefighters were on-site, working hand in hand to contain the fiery beast.
The situation required a team effort, as mutual aid was requested from neighboring fire departments including Caddo Fire Districts 4, 5, and 6, along with the Bossier City Fire Department. This collaborative effort marked a true testament to the community spirit, as firefighters from various districts joined forces in the battle against the fierce fire.
As the clock ticked past 10 p.m., the initial response of 17 fire units evolved into a robust lineup of 38 firefighting teams. Considering the intensity of the situation, fire officials mentioned that they might allow the blaze to burn itself out while closely monitoring it for at least 48 hours. This cautious approach was necessary to ensure that the fire did not spread beyond the recycling area.
The local employees at Pratt Industries also made valiant efforts to extinguish the fire before the firefighters could arrive. They quickly accessed water towers to douse the flames, demonstrating their dedication to protecting their workplace. Unfortunately, even with their early actions, the magnitude of the blaze quickly surpassed their control.
By around 6:24 p.m., great news emerged as officials reported that the fire was contained within the recycled paper area. The diligent work of the firefighters was paying off, stopping the flames from spreading to other parts of the facility.
As the firefighting efforts continued, the primary question loomed: what caused the fire? An investigation is currently underway, with fire officials seeking out surveillance footage to piece together the events leading up to the dramatic blaze. Thankfully, the silver lining in this scary situation is the absence of injuries reported among those involved.
With ongoing efforts to monitor the fire and its aftermath, Shreveport’s firefighters are showcasing their resilience in unpredictable scenarios. As the community holds its breath to see how the situation unfolds, one thing is clear: they can count on their local fire heroes to battle whatever blazes come their way.
