Homeowners expressing frustration about solar panel sales tactics

News Summary

Residents of Shreveport and Bossier City are voicing their concerns over the high-pressure sales tactics employed by Green Light Solar LLC. Homeowners report feeling misled and rushed into contracts that promise savings on electricity bills. Complaints have surged, prompting scrutiny from local authorities and raising questions about the true costs and longevity of solar panel investments in the community.

Shreveport Residents Speak Out Against Green Light Solar’s Sales Tactics

Shreveport and Bossier City locals are raising alarms about high-pressure sales tactics from Green Light Solar LLC, with many community members feeling misled by the company’s representatives. It seems like the sunny promise of solar energy is turning into a storm of confusion and frustration for some homeowners.

Unsolicited Visits Start a Solar Surge

Since late 2023, residents have been welcoming unsolicited visits from enthusiastic salespeople claiming to be affiliated with Green Light Solar. Initially, it may have seemed like they were simply trying to help homeowners save on electricity bills, but many quickly learned that the reality is far from that rosy picture. Several residents have reported being led to believe that they wouldn’t have to pay SWEPCO bills anymore once their solar panels were installed. This misconception, fueled by misleading information from sales staff, has left many scratching their heads.

A Costly Misunderstanding

Take Mike Williams from Kaylin Drive, for instance. He thought he was making a sound investment when he signed a contract for solar panels. Now, he’s realizing that he was misled and is left receiving nagging letters demanding payment. Williams is not alone. Other local homeowners echo his sentiments, revealing they felt rushed into signing contracts that tied them to loans for up to 25 years, often without a solid grasp of what they were agreeing to.

Sales Personnel Under Fire

Alicia Chandler, a vice president at Spartan Solar, has confirmed that sales staff claiming association with her company are indeed affiliated with them, but she admits she can’t explain the discrepancies in representation. As complaints pile up, the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division is getting involved, collecting information to consider a potential investigation into these practices.

Permits on the Rise

Interestingly, data shows that from September 2023 to mid-July 2024, a whopping 77 residential solar installation permits were issued to Green Light Solar in Caddo Parish. If you look at Bossier City, the numbers are almost identical, with 76 permits issued in the same timeframe. This suggests that while there’s a growing interest in solar energy, the push from Green Light Solar may be coming with strings attached.

Mixed Signals About Savings

Many homeowners have voiced their concerns about the misrepresentation regarding savings on electricity bills and the supposed partnerships with SWEPCO. Residents report confusion around the true costs, repayment terms, and the necessary upkeep related to installing solar panels. One woman even disclosed that she was facing a staggering $40,000 debt for panels after realizing her understanding of the situation was all wrong.

BBB Ratings Tell a Troubling Tale

Adding to the discontent is the fact that Green Light Solar holds a dubious “F” rating from the Better Business Bureau and has no accreditation. Spartan Solar isn’t faring much better with a “C-” rating, reflecting similar customer complaints. Residents are understandably frustrated with these scores, wondering why they’re not receiving the quality service they were promised.

A Call for Action

In light of these troubling developments, SWEPCO has also stepped in to clarify that many claims made by sales representatives are actually misleading or outright untrue. Residents who feel they’ve been wronged by these solar companies are urged to reach out to the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office or file complaints voicing their experiences. In these uncertain times, it’s crucial for homeowners to stay informed and aware.

The future of solar energy in Shreveport and Bossier City is bright with possibility, but as these complaints indicate, it’s important to proceed with caution and make informed decisions before jumping into solar investments.
