Shreveport Community Mourns the Loss of Officer Matthew Rhoden

Shreveport, La. — The city of Shreveport is grappling with a profound loss following the tragic passing of Officer Matthew Rhoden, affectionately known by his colleagues as Badge #1660. The Shreveport Police Department is coming together to honor his legacy and offer support to his family and fellow officers during this difficult time.

Remembering a Friend and Officer

Corporal Chris Bordelon, speaking on behalf of the department, expressed heartfelt sentiments about Officer Rhoden. “We really are going to miss him,” he said, highlighting Rhoden’s impact not just within the department but also in the community. “He made others feel good about themselves; he had a genuine way of connecting with people.”

Officer Rhoden was more than just a badge number. His colleagues described him as having a wonderful sense of humor and an undeniable desire to serve right from the start. “From the moment he walked through the door, you knew he was a good guy,” added Bordelon. “He had a heart to serve our community, and he always had a smile on his face. He really brightened the lives of all the officers and the community in which he served.”

A Tragic Incident

The tragedy unfolded on September 27 when Officer Rhoden and a close friend, who is also a fellow officer, were driving in a blue Ford Mustang. In a devastating turn of events, their vehicle collided with a white van while traveling at a high rate of speed.

While Officer Rhoden suffered fatal injuries in the crash, his friend has since been released from the hospital and is on the road to recovery. This has taken an emotional toll on him, as he not only suffered physical injuries but is also grappling with the mental anguish of losing a dear companion. “We know he’s going to have a long transition back to coming to work,” Bordelon mentioned. “But the Shreveport Police Department is here for him; we’re going to take care of our people.”

A Community in Mourning

Officer Rhoden leaves behind a loving family and many friends. His family had to travel from out of state, and luckily, they have all gathered in Shreveport during this trying time. Funeral arrangements are currently being finalized, with details expected to be shared soon.

In the wake of this tragic loss, the Shreveport community has shown an overwhelming outpouring of support. Bordelon thanked the community for the love and kind words that have poured in. “We really appreciate how they’ve made our department feel and how they’ve made the family of Officer Rhoden feel,” he said, acknowledging the strength of the community bond in times of grief.

Honoring Officer Rhoden’s Legacy

The Shreveport Police Department is committed to ensuring that Officer Rhoden’s memory is preserved in a meaningful way. “We want to make sure we do everything we can to honor him going forward,” Bordelon confirmed. The department recognizes the important role that Officer Rhoden played, not only as a police officer but as a friend and protector in the community.

As Shreveport continues to process this tragic event, the community, alongside Officer Rhoden’s family and friends, will hold onto the joyful memories and the laughter he brought into their lives. The candlelight moments and the heartfelt tributes will undoubtedly keep his spirit alive in the hearts of those he touched.
