Vibrant Festival Celebrations

Shreveport Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with Vibrant Events

SHREVEPORT, La. – As the sun shines brightly over the city, with a cozy high of 96°F and gentle winds, Shreveport is gearing up for a beautiful month of celebrations. From September 15 to October 15, the city will join in honoring Hispanic Heritage Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the rich history, culture, and contributions of the Hispanic community in America.

Over the past two decades, Shreveport-Bossier has seen an incredible growth in its Hispanic population. Many community members have established deep roots here, creating a vibrant and diverse atmosphere that can be felt all around the city. Briant Garcia, co-founder of the Hispanic Heritage Association of NWLA, shared some insights on this exciting transformation: “Around 2007, we saw an influx of Hispanics coming in, and since then, thousands have made Shreveport their home. Right now, Shreveport is working on its second generation of Hispanics, many of them natural-born American citizens.”

Flourishing Community and Economic Growth

The growth of the Hispanic community has not only enriched the cultural fabric of Shreveport but also contributed significantly to its economy. “When I came here in 2002, there was one church that offered Spanish service, and there were only two stores that catered to Hispanics. Fast forward to 2024, and we now have over 20 churches that offer Spanish services, along with numerous Hispanic stores,” Garcia explained.

This flourishing community isn’t just about population numbers; it’s also about entrepreneurship and job creation. The streets of Shreveport are buzzing with new Mexican restaurants, construction companies, and businesses opening daily. Garcia notes with pride: “The two biggest concrete companies in Shreveport are Latino owned. So it’s constantly growing.”

Exciting Celebrations Ahead

For the fans of festivities, the Hispanic Heritage Association has lined up several exciting events throughout the month. The highlight? A spectacular Day of the Dead Festival scheduled for October 5. This event, in collaboration with the renowned Red River Revel, promises to be a celebration to remember!

Garcia shares some of what attendees can look forward to: “We have an amazing art installation, and 12-foot Katrinas will be displayed throughout the fair. You can also enjoy vibrant performances from a Mariachi band, Aztec dancers, and folk dancers. Banda Blanca, a band coming straight from Honduras, will be there too!”

The festival will take place at Festival Plaza, and the admission is a modest $5. It’s a fantastic opportunity for everyone to immerse themselves in the lively Hispanic culture while enjoying great music, art, and delicious food.

Join the Celebration!

As the community gathers to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, it brings an inviting warmth to Shreveport. Not only will this month serve as a reminder of the contributions of the Hispanic community, but it also offers an opportunity for everyone, regardless of background, to come together, learn, and appreciate the diversity that makes the city so special. Don’t forget to check out the various events organized by the Hispanic Heritage Association of Northwest Louisiana during this vibrant month.

So, grab your friends and family, and don’t miss out on the chance to be part of something extraordinary in Shreveport this September and October!
