Shreveport Experiences Significant Decrease in Homicides Compared to Last Year

Shreveport Sees a Notable Drop in Homicides This Year!

Hey there, folks! If you’ve been keeping an eye on the news around Shreveport, you’ll be glad to hear that the city is experiencing a positive trend when it comes to crime rates, specifically homicides. With only about four weeks left in 2024, the numbers are looking significantly better compared to last year!

Homicide Stats Overview

As of now, Shreveport has reported 47 homicides—that’s 26 fewer than this time last year when the count hit a staggering 73 homicides! Can you imagine? That’s quite the drop, and it’s especially heartening knowing that we had a total of 75 homicides by the end of 2023! And let’s not forget that less crime means more peace of mind for our community.

Where Are the Hotspots?

Now, while we can’t ignore the good news, it’s also important to note where the most trouble is spotted. The 71109 zip code stands out as the most dangerous area this year, with a total of 13 homicides reported. It feels like yesterday when we were reporting a string of unfortunate events in our neighborhoods, doesn’t it? In 2022, the total number of homicides was 50, and prior to that, we hit a record high of 90 in 2021. No one wants to return to those dark days!

Details of This Year’s Homicides

This year, the causes of these homicides have varied dramatically. Of the 47 deaths reported, six were due to stabbings, and in a particularly tragic incident, a robbery attempt led to a person being run over by a vehicle. However, the majority of deaths—all but one—were caused by gunshots. It’s heartbreaking to see that among these victims, there were even eight women and individuals as young as one-year-old, with other victims aged 12, 14, and 15.

Community Efforts Paying Off

But here’s the silver lining: the Shreveport Police Department is feeling optimistic and proud of the strides they’ve made. Cpl. Chris Bordelon mentioned that there has been a significant reduction in not only homicides but also in calls regarding shots fired and shootings. This progress stems from the increased use of the Real Time Crime Center and effective measures like a dedicated team focused on seizing illegal firearms. In fact, over the past three years, SPD has successfully seized more than 3,000 guns!

The Path Ahead

As we look ahead, the community continues to come together to support these efforts. While there’s still work to be done, it’s refreshing to see that Shreveport is heading in a direction that promises safety and security for its residents. Every little bit counts, and together, the city can move towards a future that feels just a bit brighter.

In Conclusion

So, let’s keep our spirits high! With the city’s commitment to reducing violence and ensuring safety, there’s a lot of hope on the horizon. Let’s stay informed and engaged in our community. Remember, every effort we make to uplift and protect one another is a step towards a safer Shreveport!
