Firefighters in Action

Shreveport Fire Department Battles Two House Fires in One Afternoon

Shreveport, La. experienced a rather intense Saturday afternoon on September 28, as the local fire department sprang into action to tackle two separate house fires within just one hour. The day started like any other, but within a short span of time, Engine 8 and Engine 18 were busy fighting flames and ensuring the safety of the community.

First Fire on Alabama Avenue

The first fire was reported at 12:40 p.m. in the 3200 block of Alabama Avenue. Firefighters were quick to respond, with Engine 8 making it to the scene in under four minutes. Upon arrival, they found heavy flames erupting from a detached building located behind a home. Thankfully, the resident of the house managed to escape without injury, and in a heartwarming twist, firefighters rescued a dog that was also inside.

However, the fire was not without its complications. The strong winds that afternoon carried embers from the detachment to two neighboring houses, causing damage to their roofs and attic areas. Additionally, a property across the street suffered damage to its backyard grass. It wasn’t an easy task, but the valiant efforts of forty firefighters working tirelessly managed to bring the raging blaze under control. At the moment, the cause of the fire and the full extent of the damage are still under investigation.

Another Fire on Powell Street

1:30 p.m. Engine 18 arrived within five minutes and was greeted by heavy smoke and flames visible from the side of a one-story house. It was a tough spot to be in, but spirits were high as twenty-one firefighters teamed up to extinguish the flames.

Fortunately, the house was unoccupied at the time of the fire, meaning no injuries were reported among citizens or the brave firefighters who rushed to the scene. As investigators delved deeper into the situation, they were able to determine that this fire had a more mundane origin; it traced back to an unattended grass and trash fire in the backyard. While these kinds of fires can seem harmless, they serve as a reminder of the importance of keeping flammable items under control and never leaving fires unattended.

Community Support and Safety

The residents of Shreveport are rallying together in the wake of these incidents, showing support for their neighbors affected by the fires. As the investigation continues into what caused the first fire and the extent of both damages, firefighters are reminding everyone about the critical need for fire safety precautions in their homes and backyards.

In conclusion, while the day unfolded with unexpected challenges, the Shreveport Fire Department rose to the occasion, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to protecting both lives and properties in the community. Residents are encouraged to stay cautious and vigilant, ensuring that their homes remain safe and secure, especially during these dry and windy months.

Let’s keep our community safe, Shreveport!
