Shreveport Celebrates an Inspiring Teacher with Special Honor
Shreveport, Louisiana, recently witnessed a wonderful event celebrating the dedication of a teacher who goes above and beyond for her students and community. On Friday, the family-owned business Community Coffee presented the prestigious Dream Teachers H. Norman Saurage III Service Award to Katie Chirhart, a beloved teacher from South Highlands Elementary School. This award recognizes her exceptional educational skills and her substantial contributions beyond the classroom.
A Commitment to Education and Community
Katie Chirhart stood out among a competitive group of over 30 teachers from across Louisiana, thanks to her innovative approach to education and her extensive work within the community. Her efforts to create international connections for her students at Shreve Island Elementary School as well as her fundraising activities for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital impressed the selection committee greatly.
As Donna Saurage, the wife of the late Community Coffee chairman Norman Saurage III, presented the award, she expressed admiration for Chirhart’s ability to connect her students not just to local opportunities, but to global experiences. “To us, that was really special, and what a service award should honor,” Donna remarked.
Creating Connections Across Continents
One highlight of Chirhart’s ambitious curriculum was an exciting project where her Shreveport students taught a dance to children in Tanzania, Africa. Using Zoom technology, her pupils choreographed a dance that they taught to their Tanzanian peers. The students in Shreveport were able to see their friends across the ocean perform the dance in a heartwarming virtual exchange that fostered cross-cultural understanding.
“The idea was definitely bold,” Katie Chirhart said with pride. “I have certainly never asked a child or a group of children to choreograph a dance over video, and teach it to children in Tanzania. It was sweet watching the students’ faces here in Shreveport see the students in Africa perform the dance.”
A Bright Future Ahead
Cherhart has no plans of slowing down anytime soon. “We’re going above and beyond this year. I’ve got big plans; my kiddos just don’t know it yet,” she shared enthusiastically, hinting at more exciting projects to come in the near future. Her dedication to education set an inspiring example for students and fellow teachers alike, showcasing how the power of education can break down barriers and foster connections across the globe.
Community Support Shines Bright
The event was not just about honoring an individual but also celebrating the spirit of community service that defines those dedicated to education. As Community Coffee continues to support local educators, it stands as a reminder of how important it is to invest in our future through our children’s education and well-being. The recognition process for teachers like Chirhart highlights the commitment to building a stronger, more connected community.
Shreveport, a city with a heartwarming spirit, continues to uplift those who work tirelessly to make a difference. With teachers like Katie Chirhart leading the way, the future looks bright for the students and the community alike.
