Shreveport Celebrates Successful Junior Livestock Sale Raising Over $120,000 for Young Farmers

Shreveport Shines with Successful Junior Livestock Sale

Shreveport, La. – What an exciting day it was at the 2024 ArkLaTex Agricultural Council’s Junior Livestock Sale held at the State Fair of Louisiana! The atmosphere buzzed with enthusiasm and support for our talented young farmers, as this year’s auction raised over $120,000 to support spirited teenagers who poured their hearts and souls into their livestock projects.

Grand Champion Steer Steals the Show!

All eyes were on the stunning Grand Champion Steer, weighing in at a hefty 1,310 pounds and raised by none other than Ben Forbes from East Baton Rouge Parish. After an intense bidding war, this magnificent creature was sold for an astonishing $16,000! Can you imagine the pride that Ben must feel? This incredible sum is not just a financial boost; it’s also a testament to his dedication and hard work over the past year.

A Marketplace for Future Leaders

This annual auction isn’t just about the livestock; it’s genuinely a learning experience for these young exhibitors. Participating students, involved in organizations like 4-H and FFA, have personally selected, fed, groomed, and cared for their animals. From steers to lambs, broilers, goats, and hogs, these young men and women learn valuable skills that will benefit them for a lifetime.

During the sale, each exhibitor presents their stock and receives a premium for their hard work, effectively making it a special marketplace for their dreams and aspirations in agriculture. The support they gain from community members is crucial as it significantly helps nurture their passion for the agricultural industry.

A Deep-rooted Tradition

Did you know that the Junior Livestock Sale dates back to 1936? Originally sponsored by the Shreveport Kiwanis Club until 1952, the auction later transitioned to sponsorship by the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce from 1952 to 1971. Since 1972, the ArkLaTex Agricultural Council has taken the reins, ensuring that our young agricultural leaders get the recognition and support they deserve.

Spotlighting Our Young Stars

On November 1, KTBS 3 even dedicated a special segment called “Raised in Louisiana” to showcase the hard work and accomplishments of 4-H students in our local communities. Sponsored by great names like Kilpatrick’s Rose-Neath Funeral Homes and Louisiana Land Bank, this segment highlighted students learning important life skills such as leadership and citizenship. It’s heartwarming to see how these young pioneers are being nurtured within our community.

Incorporating agriculture education into our youths’ lives is an investment in their futures, as well as the future of our communities. We’ve seen the joy on their faces, and the auction serves as a glorious culmination of all the long hours, love, and labor they dedicate to their livestock projects.

Join the Fun Next Year!

As we wrap up another splendid year, we encourage everyone in the community to get involved in next year’s event! It’s a fantastic opportunity to support our local youth while also enjoying the excitement and festivity of the State Fair. Together, let’s continue to lift our young professionals and create a thriving agricultural community here in Shreveport.

If you missed out on this year’s sale, no worries—mark your calendars for next year! You’ll find an invigorating atmosphere, great company, and lots of adorable animals up for bidding. Until then, it’s time to celebrate our budding agriculturists and look forward to what next year will bring!
