A man in Shreveport has been apprehended after attempting to set himself, as well as the responding officers, on fire in a dramatic confrontation. Police responded to reports of a theft at a drugstore located on the 3000 block of N Market Street around 4 pm on Sunday, June 9.

The police had been informed about a man stealing items from a drugstore. Upon arrival, the suspected thief was noticed across the street at a petrol station. The suspect has since been identified as 36-year-old Travis Sullivan.

Escalation of Events

When the police officers moved to approach Sullivan, the situation escalated drastically. Sullivan reportedly began pouring gasoline over himself and the ground surrounding him. He then ignited the doused ground, attempting to set himself alight.
Defying police intervention, Sullivan proceeded to splash officers with gasoline in an attempt to set them on fire, police reports confirm.

The officers managed to overpower and take Sullivan into custody, successfully preventing any severe bodily harm. He faces multiple charges stemming from his dangerous outburst. These include two counts of battery on an officer, three counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, one count of arson, and one count of theft. The police have described the incident as ‘highly perilous’ but have thankfully reported that there were no serious injuries.

The disturbing incident has caused much concern amongst local residents. The area, in proximity to Brookshire’s just north of the I-220, is generally peaceful and such aggressive incidences are quite rare. Those who witnessed the event have expressed distress and concern over their safety.

Despite the dramatic events that transpired, it is fortunate that the seasoned officers from the Shreveport Police Department managed to keep the situation under control, resulting in no serious injuries or widespread damage.

Investigation into the incident and motives behind the suspect’s actions are underway. Until then, details and the suspect’s background remain confidential for investigation purposes.

More updates will be shared as the investigation progresses, and as law enforcement authorities provide additional information regarding this ‘highly perilous’ encounter.
