From Prison to Purpose

Shreveport Man’s Journey from Prison to Purpose

In the vibrant city of Shreveport, Louisiana, a remarkable story of resilience and redemption is unfolding. Meet Brandon Jackson, a man who spent nearly half of his life behind bars due to a contentious legal system that allowed non-unanimous jury decisions.

A Life Changed in an Instant

Brandon’s story begins in 1996 when he was convicted of armed robbery by a 10-2 jury vote. “I was sentenced to life in prison,” he says, reflecting on that dark moment in his life. He served a staggering 25 and a half years, despite the fact that two jurors did not agree with the decision to convict him. This situation, commonly referred to as “Jim Crow convictions,” persisted in Louisiana, allowing individuals to be found guilty without full juror agreement until the practice was finally banned in 2020.

Finding Hope After Release

Recently released from prison, Brandon is on a mission to reclaim his life and make a positive impact in his community. “To this day, I’m still on parole. I’m still fighting that case, that charge to get exonerated completely,” he shares. His determination is palpable as he steps into his new role as a personal trainer at Planet Fitness, helping others improve their lives while building his own business.

Giving Back to the Community

Brandon’s heart beats for the youth in Shreveport, as he seeks to steer them away from paths that could lead to incarceration. “I really want to help these kids. I really want to get back to helping these kids,” he emphasizes. “I don’t do it for show. I don’t do it to be on television. I do it because that’s why God opened those gates for me the second time.”

A Setback and a Comeback

Unfortunately, earlier this year, Brandon faced another challenge when he was arrested on a charge related to the theft of a firearm. He recounted his feelings: “A man in my position that just came back from doing a life sentence, to be back in the position for another charge that you did not commit, knowing the judicial system that we have today, I would have faced a lot of time.” The fear of a potential new life sentence loomed large over him, sending shivers down his spine.

Support from a Good Lawyer

Lucky for Brandon, his family reached out to attorney Alex Washington III. Alex listened intently to Brandon’s side of the story and quickly became an ally in his battle for justice. “When he told me they don’t have a weapon, I said, ‘Oh, we not talking about anything,’” Washington explained. With video footage and other evidence supporting Brandon’s innocence, they were able to challenge the wrongful charge. In August, he finally walked free once again.

Renewed Purpose

Now that he’s back on solid ground, Brandon is more motivated than ever. “I picked up where I left off with new motivation,” he said. “I really want to get back to trying to save these kids and do what needs to be done.” His commitment to youth mentorship is deeply personal, as he understands firsthand the critical need for guidance and support in navigating life’s challenges.

Looking Ahead

Brandon Jackson’s story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. As he continues to work tirelessly on his own personal healing while also helping others, he embodies the message that redemption is possible, and that it’s never too late to change the trajectory of one’s life. His journey from prison walls to inspiring young minds showcases the power of second chances and the importance of a supportive community.
