Sponsor Our ArticlesSHREVEPORT, La. – It was a beautiful evening on the first day of October, with the sun shining bright and temperatures reaching a delightful high of 91°F. Just as the warm day began to settle into a mostly clear sky, members of the South Broadmoor neighborhood geared up for a much-anticipated community event: National Night Out. The atmosphere was electric with excitement as Wes and Lynn Brown put the finishing touches on their corner lot property just off Pomeroy Drive.
For the Browns, this isn’t just any gathering. With cheerful printed signs dotting their yard, they were hard at work preparing for a block party that promises to be fun for all ages. “It’s all about coming together and having a good time,” Lynn shared with a smile. The event, running from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., featured kid-friendly activities, including a bounce house and corn hole games. But it’s not just about games—it’s about building connections and memories.
“We always have a really good time,” Lynn continued, highlighting the neighborhood spirit that arises each year during this gathering. “People are literally bringing food from one end of the block to the other, along with a bounce house from the other end and all things in between.” The camaraderie shared among neighbors truly sets the stage for a memorable evening.
This year’s theme, “More Unity, More Peace,” reflects the sentiments of the community who long for the days when getting to know your neighbors was the norm. Bob Hayslip touched on this nostalgia, reminiscing about how, “It used to be that you’d know all of your neighbors close by, and now we only know a few here.” It’s a sentiment many feel, which is why he planned to attend the event with hopes of connecting with more of the friendly faces in his vicinity.
Another neighbor, Michael Houston, echoed similar thoughts, mentioning, “It’s definitely worth it. It gives us a chance to do something.” His enthusiasm for community interaction shines through his regular neighborhood walks and interactions, showcasing the positive ripple effects such gatherings can have on fostering relationships within the community.
As a Master Gardener, Lynn relates the event to her passion for gardening. “You just know people better,” she explained. Just like tending to plants, nurturing community ties is essential. Lynn believes that allowing the event to flourish—despite any initial apprehensions—helps everyone feel more connected. “I think when you realize that you don’t know everyone, it makes it more important when someone new moves in, to extend an invitation to National Night Out. Some people come, some don’t, but they at least know they’re in a good neighborhood.”
If you’re considering joining in on the fun, mark your calendars! The block party will take place at the intersection of Pomeroy Drive and White Avenue. Attendees can look forward to delicious hot dogs and refreshing bottled water, along with a variety of shareable food dishes brought in by the neighbors. So grab your family, friends, and those favorite recipes to share!
Community members across South Broadmoor are eager to embrace the spirit of unity, peace, and fun, and this block party is the perfect opportunity. Let’s celebrate our neighbors, new and old, and enjoy a night of laughter, good food, and lasting connections. See you there!
