SHREVEPORT, LA – A car chase that launched following the discovery of a suspicious vehicle ended abruptly in tragedy. Authorities disclosed that a local man committed suicide following a pursuit with the Shreveport police early Sunday morning.
The Shreveport Police Department public information officer, Cpl. Chris Bordelon, stated that the pursuit began when patrol officers identified a vehicle that was tagged as “suspicious.” The vehicle was found parked at Airport Park on Kennedy Drive in the early hours of the day. When the officers approached the vehicle, the man swiftly drove away, sparking a chase.
The police were hot on his trail for several minutes until the driver pulled to a halt in the area of the 100 block of Lake Street. Officers drew closer to the parked vehicle and heard a single gunshot. On reaching the car, they found the driver suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Upon discovery of the gravely wounded man, the officers on site immediately commenced first aid. The man was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly upon arrival. The shocking circumstances of this incident have left a somber cloud hanging over the Shreveport community.
Cpl. Chris Bordelon also stated that the driver was subsequently identified postmortem, and found to have outstanding traffic warrants against him. This detail may provide some insight into the individual’s decision to flee from the police. Nevertheless, it still reflects a tragic outcome.
The incident is currently under investigation by law enforcement agencies. The formal identification of the deceased will be carried out by the Caddo Parish Coroner’s office, as is the procedure in such circumstances.
This unfortunate incident casts a shadow over the city of Shreveport and represents a tragic end to a routine police investigation. The law enforcement agencies involved have expressed their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. The importance of mental health awareness and suicide prevention was highlighted in the aftermath of this regrettable event.
