Shreveport Hosts Electrifying Power Line Worker Rodeo

Shreveport played host to an exciting event on December 12, 2024, as the Northwest Louisiana Technical Community College (NLTCC) held its second annual Power Line Worker Rodeo at their campus. This thrilling showcase was all about celebrating the hard work and dedication of line worker students who are just about to graduate. With hands-on demonstrations and friendly competition, these students had an amazing opportunity to show off the skills they’ve learned throughout the program.

Showcasing Skills and Team Spirit

Throughout the rodeo, students engaged in various tasks that highlighted their training, including a bell change out, switch change out, and pin change out. But perhaps the most exhilarating event was the timed Hurtman Rescue race, where students put their quick thinking and teamwork skills to the test. It was all about showing what these budding professionals have to offer!

Among the soon-to-be graduates were Brad Branch, Tyler Moore, Noah Wilson, Kerry Alex, Zack White, Karson Hartsell, and Aaron Sawangsri. Under the guidance of instructor James Barlow, who boasts experience with AEP SWEPCO, the students are well-prepared to embark on their careers with confidence!

A Program Built for Success

The Power Line Worker Program at NLTCC aims to equip students not only with crucial technical skills but also with a sense of responsibility and community service. Through a mix of hands-on training and real-world learning, students learn to be both competent and confident in this demanding profession. They leave the program with valuable credentials, including a Class A CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) and CPR certification, making them highly employable and ready for the workforce.

Potential applicants should be 18 years old, have a current driver’s license, and be ready to tackle a DOT physical. Additionally, a high school diploma or equivalent, along with the ability to work at high elevations, is necessary.

It’s also important to note that applicants must pass a DOT drug screen, the costs of which are covered by the student.
