Shreveport Embraces Tradition and Faith at Red Mass

Shreveport, a city steeped in tradition and faith, recently came together to participate in the majestic Red Mass at Trinity Catholic Church. The event, a Catholic program with ecumenical participation, marks the beginning of the judicial year and is attended by judges, lawyers, and members of various faiths to seek blessings and guidance in the administration of justice.

History and Significance

The Red Mass, shrouded in antiquity, holds a special place in the hearts of the community. Organized by the Red Mass Society and Diocese of Shreveport, the event features distinguished guests every five years, with the latest edition graced by Christophe Cardinal Pierre. The Cardinal, possibly connected to Shreveport through the “Shreveport Martyrs,” delivered the homily and led the congregation in prayer.

The “Shreveport Martyrs,” comprising Fathers Isidore A. Quemerais, Jean Pierre, Jean-Marie Biler, Louis Gergaud, and Francois LeVezouet, are remembered for their selfless service during the Shreveport Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1873. Honoring their sacrifice, this year’s Red Mass paid tribute to their legacy and dedication to the community.

Celebration through Music

A highlight of the Red Mass was the soul-stirring music that filled the church. From the uplifting strains of “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory” to the patriotic fervor of “America the Beautiful,” the musical performances added a special touch to the solemn proceedings. The Zion Baptist Church Choir, East Texas Festival Brass, and St. Cecilia Choral Society, along with talented musicians and vocalists, created a melodic tapestry that reverberated through the halls.

A Diverse Gathering

The Red Mass attracted a diverse gathering of participants, including Bishop Francis I. Malone, priests of the Diocese of Shreveport, and other esteemed dignitaries. Luminaries from the legal and judicial fields, such as Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Scott Crichton and Shreveport Bar Association President Ken Haines, came together to seek divine guidance in dispensing justice and upholding the rule of law.

Interfaith Unity and Prayers

Rabbi Dr. Jana L. De Bendetti’s recitation of Isaiah 1:10, 16-20 in Hebrew and English underscored the spirit of interfaith unity during the Red Mass. Prayers offered by Judge Stewart for judicial wisdom and Ken Haines for respect for the law resonated with the congregation, emphasizing the importance of justice, equity, and harmony in society.

Community Recognition

Each year, the Red Mass Society acknowledges a community agency for its outstanding service, with this year’s honorees being the five heroic priests known as the “Shreveport Martyrs.” Their selfless devotion to the people of Shreveport during a time of crisis continues to inspire and resonate with the community.

Parting Blessings

As the Red Mass concluded, participants gathered outside Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where Christophe Cardinal Pierre graciously posed for photos and shared blessings with the attendees. The spirits uplifted and hearts filled with reverence, the community dispersed, carrying with them the divine grace and goodwill invoked during the sacred ceremony.
