Sponsor Our ArticlesOn January 16, a school bus in Shreveport, Louisiana, was struck from behind by a tow truck while picking up a child, injuring four children and the driver of the tow truck. The bus had its stop sign extended and was following safety protocols, thanks to the bus driver’s quick thinking. While the children sustained non-life-threatening injuries, the tow truck driver suffered life-threatening injuries. Investigations are underway to understand the causes of the crash, with community support being mobilized for those affected.
In a startling incident on the morning of January 16, Shreveport, Louisiana was rattled when a school bus, while stopped to pick up a child, was struck from behind by a tow truck. This happened around 7:25 a.m. on North Market Street, close to Woodshire Circle and Osage Drive.
At the time of the accident, there were seven students aboard the bus along with the bus driver. The bus was following all safety protocols, with the stop sign extended and the lights flashing to signal its presence. Thankfully, the bus driver displayed remarkable alertness and quick thinking when she steered the bus just moments before impact, which likely prevented even more severe injuries to a child who was trying to board.
As a result of the collision, four children sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were promptly transported to a local hospital for treatment. In a more serious twist, the tow truck driver—who is an employee of Bricks Towing Company in Shreveport—suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Ochsner LSU Health.
The crash wreaked havoc on the school bus, which sustained extensive damage. The back window of the bus was shattered, there was broken glass scattered around, a dented door was beyond repair, and the bus was rendered unusable altogether. Thankfully, no students were seated at the rear of the bus at the moment of the crash, which helped to mitigate the risk of greater injuries.
Caddo Parish Schools’ transportation director has recognized the bus driver for her defensive driving skills, which played a crucial role during this chaotic moment. As part of their commitment to ensuring student safety, Caddo School District staff quickly arrived on the scene to offer support to students and families affected by this traumatic incident. In the wake of the accident, counseling and support teams are readily available to help families process the event and aid any students who may be feeling unsettled.
Investigators are currently looking into various factors that may have led to this unfortunate accident. Reports indicate that the sun may have been a contributing factor, limiting the tow truck driver’s visibility as he approached the halted school bus.
The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the crash to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that justice is served. The entire community is on edge, hoping for the swift recovery of those injured and a thorough examination of what went wrong that fateful morning.
As always, safety remains the utmost priority for Caddo Parish Schools, and they are doing everything possible to reinforce this commitment to protect the well-being of their students.
