A three-year-old nonverbal autistic child was left alone in a classroom, prompting parents to question school safety protocols. The incident has led to demands for stricter measures to protect vulnerable students and ensure their well-being while at school.
Shreveport has been shaken by the recent arrest of two employees from the Caddo Parish School District, who have been charged with child desertion. The unsettling incident revolves around a three-year-old nonverbal autistic child named Kyler Evans, who was left alone in a classroom at the 81st Street Early Childhood Education Center on Fairfield Avenue.
On February 11, 2025, after the school hours had come to a close, something went terribly wrong. Kyler, who is a young child with special needs, was left behind in a dark, empty classroom. Rosie Mohammed, a long-term substitute teacher, and Cheryl Myers, a classroom aide, are facing serious consequences for their actions, or lack thereof. Following the incident, Rosie Mohammed was fired from her job, while Cheryl Myers has been placed on administrative leave as the district assesses the situation.
The alarming scenario came to light when Kyler’s mother, Tekiyah Evans, noticed her son was not on the bus that usually drops him off after school. Panic set in as she made her way quickly to the school. Upon her arrival, Tekiyah was forced to bang on the doors to get someone’s attention, driven by the instinct to protect her child. When she finally gained entry, she discovered Kyler playing alone in a darkened classroom, still wearing his bus harness.
It was revealed that a check-out sheet indicated Kyler had apparently left the school premises, but that was far from the truth. This startling discovery raises serious questions about the protocols and safety measures in place at the Caddo Parish School District. Shreveport police juvenile crimes detectives have been investigating and have come to the conclusion that, given Kyler’s age and his limited communication skills, he would have been unable to protect himself from potential dangers.
The community is understandably outraged and concerned about the safety of students in the schools. Many parents are questioning the measures taken to ensure their children’s safety during school hours. Kyler’s mother, who rushed to save her son, has called for more stringent protocols to be implemented so that no child would ever be placed in such a vulnerable situation again.
Caddo Schools Superintendent Keith Burton has expressed the district’s commitment to student safety, indicating that actions compromising this safety will not be tolerated. He has met with Kyler’s family to discuss their concerns and assure them that the school district values their input and is dedicated to offering support. The school board has been commended for their swift actions and cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
In light of this harrowing incident, the Caddo Parish School District is expected to implement additional safety measures. The Shreveport Police Department has emphasized the importance of vigilance and accountability when it comes to protecting children in the community. It is hoped that these proactive steps will lead to a safer environment for all students attending Caddo Parish Public Schools.
As Shreveport grapples with this troubling episode, the community is coming together to advocate for change. Parents and guardians want assurances that their children will be cared for and protected during their time at school. The hope is that this incident serves as a pivotal moment for improved transparency, safety policies, and accountability throughout the school district.
