Shreveport Schools Celebrate Mardi Gras with Parades and Community Support

This past Friday, February 28, the vibrant city of Shreveport came alive with the spirit of Mardi Gras! Students at several schools joined the festivities in a celebration filled with colorful costumes, themed classes, and lively parades, bringing joy to the community.

Turner Elementary’s Festive Atmosphere

At Turner Elementary, students showed off their creativity by donning festive clothing as they took part in fun, themed classes. The excitement didn’t stop there; these enthusiastic kids even crafted floats to showcase during the parade! With bright colors and playful designs, the floats added to the visual spectacle of the day. What made this event even more enjoyable was the marvelous music provided by the Huntington High School marching band, which filled the air with energetic tunes that had everyone tapping their feet.

Local Krewes Join the Fun

The celebration was further enhanced as local krewes, including the Krewe of Gemini and the Krewe of Barkus and Meoux, got involved in the festivities. With their presence, the parades became a true display of community spirit, highlighting the rich cultural heritage that Mardi Gras embodies.

Learning and Celebration at Louisiana Key Academy

Over at Louisiana Key Academy, students took a different approach by diving into the history of Mardi Gras during their classes. This year, they were not just learners but active participants in a parade of their own. The event saw families and friends come out to cheer on the 120 students in grades K-5, emphasizing the school’s commitment to education, especially in supporting children with dyslexia.

Adorable Festivities for Youngsters at Eddie D. Jones Head Start Center

The fun even reached the little ones at the Eddie D. Jones Head Start Center, where a special parade was organized just for younger students. The Krewe of Crayons, Shapes, and Hearts was there to lend a helping hand in making the event a memorable one for these enthusiastic youngsters. Community involvement was a highlight, with members from both the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office and Shreveport Police Department joining the celebration, showcasing the town’s strong support for local education.

Emphasizing Community Support

Teacher Maybelline Jackson took a moment to express how uplifting it was to see such enthusiastic community support during the Eddie D. Jones parade. The aim was clear: to celebrate the students and foster a sense of belonging in a supportive environment.

Upcoming Mardi Gras Celebrations

With Mardi Gras officially scheduled for Tuesday, March 4, the excitement in Shreveport is just getting started! Local parades will kick off the weekend with the Krewe of Gemini on March 1 and the Krewe of Highland on March 2. It promises to be a weekend filled with celebration, music, and community joy.

Emphasis on Safety During Celebrations

While the festivities bring a lively atmosphere, local authorities are urging everyone to stay safe during the celebrations. The Shreveport Police Department has reiterated the importance of safety during Mardi Gras. At the recent Krewe of Centaur parade, increased security measures were implemented, resulting in five arrests and over 40 citations for underage drinking. Some individuals arrested were also found to be armed, raising safety concerns.

A Call for Responsible Celebrations

Officers emphasized that issues of alcohol abuse and firearms can pose real dangers during parades. They took swift action at the Krewe of Centaur event, aimed at preventing potentially violent situations and ensuring a fun, safe environment for all attendees.

As Shreveport gears up for the big Mardi Gras festivities, it’s evident that the combination of fantastic community spirit, educational involvement, and safety measures are key ingredients to making this celebration truly remarkable!
