Shreveport, Louisiana – The heart-wrenching story of a young life cut short continues to reverberate through our community, as a second man has been convicted in connection to the shooting death of 13-year-old Landry Anglin. On Monday, September 16, 2024, the Caddo Parish District Attorney’s Office announced that Gavontay Carnelious Johnson, aged 30, pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice related to his involvement in this tragic incident that occurred back on May 1, 2022.
On that fateful day, Anglin was visiting family in the 4500 block of Fairfield Avenue when she was struck by a stray bullet. Reports indicate that Johnson was driving a Chevrolet Cavalier east down Erie Street when a passenger in his vehicle, Kenmiccael Ray, opened fire on another vehicle—a white Chrysler 300 that was following them. According to the District Attorney’s office, Ray fired a Kel-Tech rifle more than ten times. Sadly, one of those bullets found its mark in young Landry, claiming her life.
That evening took a dark turn as Johnson fled to his uncle’s house near the intersection of Fairfield Avenue and Mitchell Street. Shortly after, Johnson’s vehicle was targeted and shot at by people in a Dodge Charger. Video footage from this chaotic scene captured Johnson and others loading the damaged Cavalier onto a trailer, attempting to escape the grim realities of the day.
Johnson didn’t stay in Shreveport long. He left Louisiana and made his way to Texas, where law enforcement apprehended him just a few days later, alongside Ray. The authorities discovered that both men were in possession of the murder weapon at the time of their arrest; shocking evidence that linked them directly to the crime.
Under the plea agreement reached with the District Attorney’s Office, Johnson has now been sentenced to 20 years in prison by District Judge Ramona Emanuel. This sentence comes after a long and painful journey for Landry’s family and friends, who have been left grappling with their tremendous loss.
Earlier in the summer, in June 2024, Ray was sentenced to life in prison for his role in this tragic event. As justice unfolds, two additional defendants involved in this case are still awaiting their trial, leaving the community on edge and filled with questions about how such a senseless act could occur.
The shooting has cast a long shadow over Shreveport, a place where residents often come together in times of hardship. Many community members are reflecting on the impact of gun violence, especially on young lives like that of Landry Anglin, taken far too soon. The sense of loss hangs heavy in the air, reminding everyone of the importance of safety and justice in our neighborhoods.
As this case continues to unfold, the hope is that the community will not only seek justice for Landry but also strive to cultivate a safer environment for all our children. The pain of losing a young life is profound, and it stirs conversations about what we can do to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Moving forward, Shreveport residents are urged to support one another and engage in dialogue on how to combat violence in our streets. The protective mantle over our children’s lives begins with us, and every small act of love and kindness can contribute to a brighter tomorrow.
