Shreveport Launches Friends of the Community Program to Support Individuals with Special Needs

Shreveport Embraces New Program for Individuals with Special Needs

Shreveport, Louisiana is taking a significant step forward in enhancing public safety for those with special needs. In light of September being Mental Health Awareness Month, local law enforcement agencies have come together to launch an exciting new initiative known as the Friends of the Community program. This collaboration involves the Shreveport Police Department, the Bossier City Police Department, and the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office.

What is the Friends of the Community Program?

The Friends of the Community program is designed to support individuals who might have disabilities that are not immediately visible. With this program, residents can request a special disability decal that will serve as a reminder to first responders that they might encounter individuals with special needs during an emergency. This voluntary program aims to create a safer environment and foster understanding in situations where communication might be challenging.

A Heartfelt Call for Awareness

Cpl. Chris Bordelon, a dedicated law enforcement officer, highlighted the importance of this initiative by stating, “We have people in our community who are hurting, and we can’t necessarily see the hurt. We have to advocate for them in ways that they can’t advocate for themselves.” His enthusiasm makes it abundantly clear that this program is not just a new initiative; it represents a community-wide effort to recognize and support those who may feel isolated or misunderstood.

How Does It Work?

Getting your own Friends of the Community decal is straightforward and completely confidential. There are no fees involved, making it accessible to everyone who might benefit from it. The decals can be displayed on vehicles or homes, serving as a little flag that alerts emergency responders to be extra mindful of the individual’s unique needs. This way, when officers arrive on the scene, they can quickly understand the context and respond appropriately.

Ensuring Responsible Use

While the program is welcoming, Cpl. Bordelon made it clear that responsibility is essential. He emphasized, “We don’t want this to be something that can be abused. These stickers that go on cars and residences do not give a person the right to not follow the law or not listen to law enforcement instructions.” In essence, these decals are meant to provide crucial insights to law enforcement but do not change the need for lawful behavior.

A Helping Hand for All

For those who may find it difficult to visit the police department in person to pick up a decal, arrangements can be made to ensure that assistance is provided. The goal is inclusivity, making sure that everyone who needs this little boost can have it, without added stress to their daily lives.

Community Support and Future Goals

Ultimately, this new program is being embraced as a great leap forward, not just by law enforcement, but by the community as a whole. Bordelon remarked on his excitement, saying that it marks a step in the right direction for advocacy and support. It’s a move towards understanding, empathy, and better communication during times of crisis.

In Shreveport, the introduction of the Friends of the Community program signifies a collective commitment to elevating public safety and ensuring that individuals with special needs are cared for and recognized, even in challenging situations. As this program takes off, it’s clear that the heart of Shreveport is all about support and community.
