News Summary

Shreveport has approved the installation of speed cameras throughout Caddo Parish in response to residents’ concerns about speeding. Officials are focusing on twelve notorious locations where speeding is prevalent, with studies showing over 50,000 drivers exceeding the speed limit. The city aims to create a safer driving environment, improving compliance rates and reducing tickets in the long run. The rollout of the cameras is expected to be smooth, with public education on rules and regulations before implementation.

Speed Cameras Coming to Shreveport: What You Need to Know

The City of Shreveport has recently given the green light for a new initiative that involves installing speed cameras all over Caddo Parish. This decision, as explained by city officials, is largely a response to the voices of local residents who have raised concerns regarding speeding in their neighborhoods. It looks like the local government is really listening!

Where Will the Cameras Go?

Officials are eyeing twelve high-speed locations with a notorious reputation for speeders. According to studies made by Blue Line Solutions, about 50,000 drivers in these areas have been clocked exceeding the speed limit by at least 11 miles per hour. That’s quite a staggering number! With these new cameras, the city hopes to tackle this pressing issue.

Shreveport’s mayor sees this move as a way to ensure everyone adheres to speed limits, paving the way for a safer driving environment. The mayor anticipates that once the cameras are in place, compliance rates will improve, resulting in fewer tickets for everyone in the long run.

What About Past Complaints?

While the city has received some feedback about the existing school zone cameras—particularly regarding fines issued during non-school hours—the good news is that very few complaints have been logged about inaccuracies in camera operations. This indicates that these systems may be running pretty smoothly!

Looking back to the recently concluded Mardi Gras season, city officials proudly noted the success of safety measures, and they are optimistic that upcoming parades will experience similar success, too. With safety at the forefront, this new initiative seems well-timed.

What’s Happening With the Current Camera Program?

The existing school zone traffic camera program, which is also managed by Blue Line Solutions, brings in approximately $2.5 million in revenue each year. This program has shown that there’s definitely a demand for traffic monitoring in the city. In addition, Caddo Parish is already collaborating with Blue Line Solutions to set up its own traffic camera system, which is still developing. It appears that traffic regulation is a big priority for everyone involved!

Speeding Statistics: Where’s the Hot Spot?

According to recent surveys, Shreveport sees over 54,000 speeders weekly on the streets that were evaluated. Some key hotspots for speeding in the city include:

  • Jewella Avenue and 70th Street to Hollywood Avenue: 12,712 speeders per week (26.7% of total traffic).
  • Pines Road and Santa Monica Boulevard to Border Lane: 9,969 speeders per week (22.1% of total traffic).
  • Clyde Fant Parkway and Grimmett Drive to Jack Wells Boulevard: 6,942 speeders per week (11.6% of total traffic).

Other notable locations show significant speeding issues, which highlights the need for this new initiative. The goal is to tackle these troubling trends effectively.

What’s Next?

Residents can expect a well-planned rollout of the new camera systems that aims to be less controversial than previous measures. Before the cameras become operational, the public will be informed of the rules and regulations to avoid any surprises when fines begin to be issued. Everyone appreciates a heads-up!

The installation of these cameras is expected to happen within 60 days following the completion of further traffic studies. With all these measures in place, Shreveport is gearing up for a safer and more compliant future on the roads!
