Shreveport Students Shine in Summer STEM Program with Support from SWEPCO

Shreveport Students Shine in Summer STEM Program

As the summer sun began to set on another season, Shreveport buzzed with excitement for the future. The Louisiana Preparatory Program, known fondly as LaPREP, recently wrapped up its 31st annual session, and it was nothing short of a remarkable experience for the young minds involved.

SWEPCO Steps Up for Local Education

The sweet sounds of laughter and learning echoed throughout the halls as SWEPCO, an electric utility company, stepped forward with a generous contribution of $4,000 to support LaPREP. This action is a testament to their ongoing commitment to enriching the educational landscape for students across the region, particularly in the fields of math, science, and engineering (often dubbed STEM). With this funding, the new school year is beginning on a hopeful note for many aspiring students looking to carve out a future in these vital fields.

A Program That Changes Lives

This summer, the program welcomed 45 eager middle school students, including 25 new participants excited to dive into hands-on science adventures, and 20 returning students ready to build on their experiences from the previous year. Each participant experienced a curriculum that honed their skills in areas such as abstract reasoning, problem-solving, and technical writing. The ultimate goal? To provide these bright individuals a sneak peek into their potential career paths.

One of the standout moments from this year was undoubtedly the visit to SWEPCO’s Arsenal Hill Power Plant. The students were given a behind-the-scenes tour, illuminating the complex world of energy production. As Tim Williams, the Senior Energy Production Supervisor, expressed, “Hosting the LaPREP students at Arsenal Hill was a truly rewarding experience. Their curiosity and excitement were inspiring, and we’re proud that SWEPCO can contribute to their future success.”

Engaging Lessons and Memorable Visits

Over the span of seven weeks, these students were immersed in classes that covered everything from logic and algebraic structures to cybersecurity and Python programming. Education doesn’t happen only in the classroom, though. The students also ventured beyond the walls of LaPREP to visit influential local sites, including the LSU Medical Center, Sci-Port, and Providence House. Such trips not only broadened their knowledge but also enriched their cultural experiences.

Irina Ilioaea, the LaPREP Program Director, shared, “SWEPCO’s investment has been instrumental in LaPREP’s success. Their long-term commitment has made a lasting impact on countless students, and we look forward to continuing this important partnership.” It’s evident that such collaborations serve to uplift the community and inspire the next generation.

Setting Students on Pathways to Success

Since its inception, LaPREP has positively impacted more than 925 students from the Shreveport/Bossier area. Many of these students have gone on to achieve remarkable feats in their academic and professional journeys, focusing on STEM-related degrees and careers. This is no small feat and exemplifies the profound impact of programs like LaPREP.

Michael Corbin, a representative from SWEPCO, perfectly summarized the initiative: “Supporting programs like LaPREP is at the heart of SWEPCO’s mission to foster the next generation of leaders in STEM. By investing in these students, we’re helping them unlock new opportunities and contributing to the strength of our local community.”

As the curtain falls on this year’s summer session, the anticipation builds for what’s to come next year. LaPREP continues to be a shining beacon not only for individual students but for the community, demonstrating the strengths found in education, collaboration, and investment in the future.
