Shreveport Teacher Katie Chirhart Receives Dream Teachers Service Award for Exceptional Community Contributions

Shreveport Teacher Recognized for Dedication to Students and Community

SHREVEPORT, La. – In a heartwarming assembly held last Friday at South Highlands Elementary School, the family-owned business Community Coffee honored an outstanding local educator, Katie Chirhart. The occasion was special not just for Chirhart but also for the school community, as she was awarded the Dream Teachers H. Norman Saurage III Service Award. This prestigious award recognizes exceptional teachers who go above and beyond in their commitment to students and their communities.

A Stellar Selection

This year, Chirhart was chosen from a pool of more than 30 talented teachers across Louisiana. “We are just so thrilled to honor Katie,” said Donna Saurage, the wife of the late chairman of the board, H. Norman Saurage III, who the award is named after. “Her work transcends the classroom, and she truly embodies the spirit of this award.”

Chirhart, who teaches at Shreve Island Elementary School, has been recognized for her remarkable educational and leadership abilities, particularly in her endeavors to foster international relationships among her students. One of her notable projects involved connecting her students with their peers in Tanzania, Africa, where they collaboratively choreographed a dance via Zoom.

A Global Connection

In a world where connection knows no bounds, Chirhart’s students took on the challenge of teaching Tanzanian kids a dance over video. “I’ve certainly never asked a group of children to choreograph a dance over video, and teach it to children in Tanzania,” Chirhart shared, her excitement palpable. The students in Shreveport had the delightful opportunity to watch their Tanzanian counterparts perform the dance, creating a moment of pure joy and connection.

Heartfelt Community Involvement

Beyond her international collaboration, Chirhart has made significant contributions to her community, notably raising funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “What she has done for her community is incredible. She has not only dedicated her days to teaching but has also taken the extra step to reach out beyond her classroom,” Donna Saurage added.

The award ceremony was filled with admiration and respect, with students and faculty alike celebrating Chirhart’s achievements. “It was sweet watching students’ faces here in Shreveport see students in Africa perform the dance. It was fun for them to engage with a different culture,” she expressed, reflecting on the impact this has had on her pupils.

Looking Towards the Future

With her innovative approach to education and community service, Chirhart has some big plans ahead. “We’re going above and beyond this year. I’ve got big plans, my kiddos just don’t know it yet,” she revealed with a smile, looking forward to what the coming months might bring for her students, both locally and internationally.

Celebrating Our Educators

The Dream Teachers H. Norman Saurage III Service Award is a beautiful way to honor the passion and dedication of educators like Chirhart. Community Coffee’s commitment to uplifting teachers and their service is a reminder of the positive impact educators have on their students and the greater community.

As the school year continues, we are reminded of the profound influence teachers have. Students like those in Chirhart’s classroom not only learn from their textbooks but also about compassion and connection, two invaluable lessons that will stick with them for years to come.
