Shreveport Mayor’s Women’s Commission Holds Empowering Teen Summit
Shreveport, La. – In an inspiring initiative aimed at empowering young women, the Shreveport Mayor’s Women’s Commission hosted its second Teen Summit today, welcoming a diverse group of teenage girls from across the city. The event provided a platform for education on vital topics including financial literacy, sex trafficking awareness, and etiquette.
Focus on Education and Empowerment
This year’s summit brought enthusiastic participation, with organizers expressing gratitude for the turnout. Participants were eager to soak in the knowledge and share their newfound insights with their peers. “If we get one person and provide them with that information, I’m excited because they take that with them; it brings me joy,” stated the Commission’s president.
Financial Literacy Workshops
The financial literacy session aimed to equip the teens with essential budgeting skills. “Our young students like to spend, spend, spend, but we want them to budget a bit,” explained the Teen Summit chairwoman. She emphasized the importance of setting aside funds for both regular savings and fun activities, promoting long-term financial stability.
Addressing Critical Issues
One of the summit’s standout discussions revolved around the alarming rates of sex trafficking in the region. “Shreveport is one of the top three places in Louisiana for this issue. I didn’t know that before I came here, and I’m glad I learned,” said one participant, highlighting the urgency for awareness in their community.
Youth Perspectives
A high school senior attending the event expressed her commitment to preparing for the future. “I wanted to learn more about financials since I’m graduating soon. The talks on sex trafficking really opened my eyes to the danger that can come from unexpected places,” she added.
Looking Ahead
The Shreveport Mayor’s Women’s Commission plans to continue hosting the Teen Summit in the future, with the goal of further empowering both women and youth within the community. As these young women leave the summit, they carry with them not only knowledge but also an enhanced awareness that can inspire future discussions and actions.
