Shreveport Man Arrested on Charges of Toddler’s Death

In a shocking case that has gripped the city of Shreveport, Louisiana, a man has been arrested in relation to the fatal shooting of a one-year-old child over the weekend. The suspect, identified as Deanthony Griffin, 27, has a past history of violent crime.

Second-degree Murder Charges

Griffin was detained in connection with the death of Karter Martin, a toddler who was tragically killed in the early hours of Sunday at an apartment complex on East Stoner Avenue. According to the police, the young boy was sleeping with his parents when he was fatally wounded in the head. Another man also sustained injuries from the incident.

Prior Criminal Convictions

Upon investigation into Griffin’s history, it was found that he has previous convictions for violent crimes. Caddo Parish court documents reveal Griffin had been earlier booked for home-invasion and simple kidnapping in April 2019. He later pleaded guilty to the kidnapping charge in September 2020 and received a five-year prison sentence, with all but two years suspended. In addition to the sentence, he was placed under supervised probation for three years. The home-invasion charge was dismissed subsequently.

Detailed Account of Previous Convictions

Records indicate that Griffin forcefully entered his girlfriend’s apartment during this incident, physically dragging her out by her hair before forcing her into his car. The woman was able to contact a friend to notify the police. Initial confusion about her whereabouts prompted her family to report her as missing, but she returned to her apartment shortly after. Despite admitting to investigators that she had been kidnapped by Griffin, the woman declined to press charges, citing she did not want to cause him any problems or lead to his arrest. The couple had been together for a few years and had a history of domestic violence.

Further Investigations

Investigators suspect Griffin drove a vehicle that stopped in front of the apartment complex shortly before exiting the vehicle and initiating the gunfire that struck the toddler, according to the probable cause statement included in his jail booking. The statement, however, does not clarify whether Griffin being “captured” means that he was caught on camera or video. Corporal Chris Bordelon, in a press statement, confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing and additional arrests are expected.

Calls for Justice

The tragic incident has caused widespread concern among residents and officials alike. While echoeing the sentiment, officials have underlined their commitment to ensuring justice for the deceased toddler. The arrest marks a significant step forward in the case; however, the investigation so far indicates the complex nature of the unfolding scenario and the need for further inquiry. As residents await more information, the community grieves the untimely and tragic loss of young Karter Martin.
