Shreveport, Louisiana – The community is in mourning after a tragic accident claimed the life of a young girl over the weekend. Seraphina Shaver, a 14-year-old student at Caddo Magnet High School, lost her life in a UTV crash in the Crichton community of Red River Parish.
The crash occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday on a private road during a family gathering. According to Red River Parish Sheriff Glen Edwards, Seraphina was one of four juveniles riding on the UTV when the driver lost control. The vehicle overturned, and unfortunately, Seraphina was ejected from it. Reports indicate that none of the passengers were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
Seraphina was initially taken in a private vehicle to Highway 515 to meet an ambulance, which then rushed her towards Shreveport. However, they were met en route by a Life Air helicopter that transported her to Ochsner LSU Health hospital, where she was sadly pronounced dead.
The loss has hit hard in Shreveport, especially considering Seraphina’s father, Jake Shaver, is a dedicated firefighter. Friends and family have expressed their grief, with Ashley McCutcheon, a community member, stating, “This family is so near and dear to my heart, and like yours, my heart is absolutely broken with the loss of Seraphina.”
To assist the grieving Shaver family with medical and funeral expenses, a GoFundMe account has been created. The support underscores the impact Seraphina had on her community.
McCutcheon also mentioned that Seraphina’s sister, Breanna, who is in eighth grade, was on the UTV and sustained injuries but is expected to recover. The Shaver family is also compassed by other siblings and a mother, further deepening the community’s sorrow.
Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the crash. However, they have confirmed that alcohol was not a contributing factor in this tragic event.
This incident serves as a harsh reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of safety measures when engaging in recreational activities. As the community comes together to mourn the loss of Seraphina, support for her family and a call for awareness surrounding UTV safety remains paramount.
