The incident unfolded during a packed night at the bar, leading to chaos and injuries, including a gunshot wound to Small’s friend. Brandon Merritt, 27, faces serious charges after the confrontation, which reflects the darker side of social media conflicts. The tragic event has prompted discussions about safety in community venues.
In the quiet hours of the night on September 2, 2023, a shocking incident unfolded at the Time Out! Sports Bar in Shreveport, leaving a community reeling from the loss of a young mother. Lajah Clarissa Small, just 26 years old, was shot and killed, marking a tragic culmination of a long-standing social media feud that had taken a dark turn.
The shooting occurred shortly after 1 a.m., during a time when the bar was bursting at the seams with patrons. As chaos erupted in the aftermath, people rushed towards the parking lot, desperate to escape the unfolding nightmare. Small was shot once in the chest, while her friend was also caught in the violence, sustaining a gunshot wound to the leg. As the dust settled, it became evident that the incident stemmed from an escalating conflict.
According to reports, the rivalry between Small and the identified shooter, Brandon Merritt, 27, had been brewing for some time, primarily fuelled by volatile exchanges on social media, notably Facebook. Their skirmishes were often personal, highlighting jabs about each other’s appearances, which incited considerable online engagement. It appeared that what started as petty disagreements had sparked an atmosphere ripe for confrontation.
As the night progressed, witnesses observed Merritt displaying increasingly threatening behavior, including bumping into Small multiple times and locking eyes with her in a manner that likely made her uncomfortable. The tension reached a breaking point when a physical altercation broke out: Small evidently attempted to throw a punch at Merritt. What followed was a split-second decision that would change lives forever. Merritt, claiming to have “blacked out” during the altercation, pulled out a firearm and discharged it.
Merritt later admitted that he had consumed a substantial amount of tequila before entering the bar, potentially clouding his judgment that fateful night. Yet, Shreveport Police found his assertion of self-defense difficult to believe, especially when considering his size in relation to Small’s. Witness accounts suggest Merritt was quite larger than Small, casting further doubt on his claims.
As the police launched an investigation into the incident, Merritt did not flee far. He sought refuge at his mother’s house, where he recounted the chilling tale of the evening’s events. However, the situation escalated again when he was ambushed by a group of men who believed he was responsible for Small’s death, resulting in Merritt being shot in the leg. His brother-in-law, D’Varciea Small, reportedly attacked Merritt in custody, loudly proclaiming, “you killed my sister,” and subsequently faced charges for simple battery.
Brandon Merritt now faces serious legal repercussions, including charges of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. Despite his not guilty plea, the court has set his bail at an extraordinary $1,500,000, underscoring the severity of the situation. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 1, and as the legal proceedings unfold, the community remains shaken by the violent turn of events.
In the wake of this horrifying incident, the Time Out! Sports Bar has announced its closure. This decision follows a troubling trend of violence at the establishment over the past year, leaving many to wonder about the safety of social environments in their beloved Shreveport. The aftermath of this tragedy raises pressing questions about accountability and the need for better security measures in venues across the area.
The loss of Lajah Clarissa Small has left a void that cannot be filled, highlighting the devastating impact of social media feuds and violence. As Shreveport processes this tragedy, the hope remains for better days ahead, where such senseless acts do not find a place in the community.
