Shreveport Celebrates Extraordinary Women with the 2024 Women of Distinction Awards

Shreveport, Louisiana, recently witnessed an inspiring event that paid tribute to remarkable women making significant strides in their communities. On September 19th, 2024, the LSU Shreveport Ballroom buzzed with excitement as the Girl Scouts of Louisiana Pines to the Gulf held their annual Women of Distinction awards ceremony. Among the shining stars of the evening was Alex Person, the Community Engagement Director at Volunteers for Youth Justice (VYJ).

A Night to Remember

This year, Alex Person was honored as one of nine distinguished honorees, recognized for her outstanding contributions to the community and her deep commitment to youth initiatives. The ceremony celebrated women who exemplify exceptional leadership and passion, inspiring future generations to follow their lead.

Alex wasn’t alone in her honor. Other honorees included inspiring figures such as Gisele Proby-Bryant, Dr. Heather Carpenter, Dr. Tiffany George, Kristen Powers, Latoria Thomas, Dr. Regina Webb, and Felecia Williams. The evening also saw Victor Thomas receiving the “Man Enough to be a Girl Scout” accolade, a recognition celebrating male champions of female empowerment.

Dedication Beyond Measure

In her position at VYJ, Alex Person works tirelessly to cultivate community ties and enhance youth development programs. Her role doesn’t stop at VYJ, though. She also serves as the president of the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier. In this capacity, she’s made remarkable strides towards community development and engagement.

Beyond her leadership roles, Alex is actively involved in several organizations, including Bossier Youth Leadership and the Commission for Women in Bossier City. It’s clear that her heart is dedicated to fostering a nurturing environment for the youth. Yet, Alex’s talents don’t end there—she is a member of First Baptist Church of Haughton, where she teaches 11th-grade Sunday school, guiding young minds in both spirituality and community service.

Academic Achievements

In addition to her community efforts, Alex is an educational force as an adjunct professor at Louisiana Tech University. Whether she’s in the classroom or her community, Alex is tireless in her efforts to educate and empower. She holds her undergraduate degree from Louisiana Tech University and a master’s degree from Louisiana State University Shreveport, both of which undoubtedly support her various roles within the community.

A Message from the Heart

“Alex’s dedication to the community and her work with youth exemplify the spirit of the Women of Distinction award,” said Kelli Todd, Executive Director of Volunteers for Youth Justice. “We are incredibly proud of her achievements and the positive influence she continues to have on our community.”

Celebrating Impactful Leadership

The Women of Distinction award is not just a decorative honor; it serves as a beacon of inspiration for what women can achieve. Each honoree demonstrates exceptional leadership, commitment, and advocacy in their respective fields, leaving a lasting impact on their communities.

As we reflect on this inspiring night, it’s a beautiful reminder of the positive changes that individuals like Alex Person can bring to their communities. With strong role models like her paving the way, the future looks bright for Shreveport’s youth and the community at large.
