Progress Achieved on Shreveport Police Department Substations

Shreveport Police Department Substations Making Headway

SHREVEPORT, La. – Significant developments have been reported on the Shreveport Police Department’s upcoming substations. This initiative will establish substations across Shreveport in an effort to enhance public safety, optimize response times, and increase community presence. The city’s Police Chief, Wayne Smith, affirmed, “Progress is being made.”

Funding and Commencement of Construction

The funding of these three substations was made feasible through a 2021 bond. Local residents are expected to witness the commencement of construction soon. Earlier this month, permission was granted to solicit construction bids for the North Market Street and Monkhouse Drive substations, allowing work to begin later this year.

Smith disclosed that demolition at the North Market substation location is nearing completion. “It is in the engineer’s hands to set the grades and elevation. The only snag was Daisy a Day because it was supposed to be part of the demolition process, and additional work is necessary to prepare it for demolition,” Smith elaborated.

Community Reactions

Tabatha Taylor, Shreveport city councilwoman, echoed her enthusiasm about this development. “I am excited to see dirt turning. Dirt turning signifies progress and a more advanced community, and I’m elated about that,” she said.

As for the Monkhouse Drive location, Smith expressed readiness to begin work on part of that complex. “Mainly the part where we will be moving our traffic bureau, which comprises approximately 25 or 30 people. The rest will follow from there. So, I am so happy to see things starting to progress,” he added.

Future Plans

The city is currently in the process of pinning down a location and financial resources for a third substation. Until then, the Shreveport Police Department and local stakeholders remain steadfast in their efforts to ensure public safety and encourage community engagement.

These planned substations are more than just administrative hubs. They will be catalysts for change and growth in the community by providing a local recourse for public safety issues, maintaining order, and fostering the relationship between the Shreveport Police Department and local residents.
