Bus and train collision scene
In a shocking incident on Mansfield Road, a SporTran local city bus was struck by a United Pacific train on the afternoon of May 18th, 2024. The accident reportedly took place at the intersection of Mansfield Road and West 70th Street, shortly after 3:15 p.m. when Shreveport police were dispatched to the site.
Frightening though this may sound, initial reports state that the SporTran bus had come to a stop at a traffic light near the edge of the railway track. It was here that the oncoming United Pacific train had a collision with the tail end of the bus.
SporTran CEO, Dinero Washington, expressed deep concern over the incident. He assured the public that SporTran is working in close collaboration with the City of Shreveport and other relevant agencies to determine the exact cause of this unlikely collision.
Washington stated, “We’re still in the early stages but incredibly grateful that it appears no one was seriously hurt. We’ve already engaged our vehicle accident protocol and procedures, including reviewing the on-board video and the collection of witness statements.”
One passenger did need to be rushed to the hospital following the accident, yet was subsequently released after a thorough check-up. Thankfully, no other injuries have been reported so far.
An extensive investigation has been launched into the incident to establish its cause. The outcome of this investigation will be crucial to developing measures that can prevent such dangerous collisions from happening in future. As of now, no official statement regarding the cause of the accident has been released.
As the city comes to terms with the accident, the primary concern remains towards ensuring public safety. SporTran has vowed to thoroughly examine its internal safety procedures as part of the investigation. They will review vehicle safety protocols, traffic signal operations, and driver training programs to prevent such incidents from reoccurring.
As we await further updates on this incident, it is a solemn reminder of the fact that maintaining the highest degree of safety is of utmost importance in public transportation.
