Innovating the Future: STARBASE Louisiana Inspires Young Minds in Bossier City

Bossier City is buzzing with excitement as STARBASE Louisiana joins hands with Bossier Schools to shape the next generation of innovators. This collaborative effort presents science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in a way that engages young learners and gets them excited about their potential. Through hands-on experiences, students are diving into the world of STEM like never before.

A National Initiative with Local Impact

STARBASE is part of a national program spearheaded by the Department of Defense (DoD), operating in about 90 locations across the U.S. It was initially launched as a pilot program by the Kellogg Foundation with the goal of nurturing new engineering talent from American schools. This initiative has transformed over the years and today aims to inspire students through immersive learning experiences.

The Critical Fifth Grade

According to Richard Scott, the director of STARBASE Louisiana, research shows that the make-or-break moment for students in math and science often occurs in fifth grade. With this in mind, STARBASE emphasizes the importance of exposure to various fields within the STEM disciplines, encouraging creativity and exploration. Scott shares, “We say ‘Hands-on, minds on’ because all our experiments are designed with touching something.” This motto highlights the interactive nature of the program, as students engage with STEM concepts and see the real-world connections.

Expeditionary Learning Opportunities

Through a partnership with Bossier Parish Schools, middle school and high school students have the chance to undergo five full days of expeditionary learning at STARBASE’s own facility located at Barksdale Air Force Base. Scott explains how the program initially started with just one class per day, but thanks to Bossier Schools’ enthusiasm, it has grown into a thriving relationship where more schools can participate. This expanded access has led to a significant increase in students’ STEM test scores.

Proven Success

In the past 20 years, STARBASE has shown a remarkable 168% verified increase in STEM skills. Although testing was halted to give teachers more time in the classroom, the impacts of these hands-on experiences remain evident. Scott emphasizes that students often have so much fun exploring STEM that they don’t realize they’re actually learning algebra or chemistry. “For example, when they’re working with robots, they don’t know they’re learning about algebra and the scientific method—they just want to play!” he explains.

A Legacy of Excellence

As one of the featured programs under the DoD umbrella, STARBASE Louisiana has earned numerous accolades over the past 25 years, all while instilling a passion for STEM in students. Ultimately, the true measure of success lies in the students who have gone on to become engineers and aviators, with many pursuing careers at renowned companies like SpaceX. Scott shares the inspiration he derives from hearing success stories from STARBASE graduates.

Looking Ahead

So, what’s next for STARBASE Louisiana as they enter their next chapter? Scott assures us that while their mission remains rooted in developing a love for STEM, they’re also committed to evolving their curriculum. Notably, this Bossier City location has played a pivotal role in shaping half of the national curriculum used across the country. “We’ll continue to grow and adapt,” he promises, assuring us that the future of STEM education is bright.

Final Thoughts

As Bossier City embraces this innovative partnership, the impact on local students cannot be overstated. Through STARBASE Louisiana, young minds are being inspired to dream big and explore new possibilities in the fields of STEM, paving the way for a brighter future. With hands-on activities, real-world applications, and a spirit of exploration, the next generation of innovators is ready to take flight.
