SWEPCO Awards Grant Benefiting Caddo Parish School Students
Preamble
In a commendable move, the Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) has announced its intention to award a generous grant of $75,000 to Volunteers of America North Louisiana. As part of its corporate social responsibility commitments, the decision directly benefits Caddo Parish school students by expanding two existing educational programs.
The Partnership
The strategic partnership between SWEPCO and Volunteers of America North Louisiana seeks to augment the breadth and depth of two primary programs – Communities in School (CIS) and the LightHouse program. Both programs, which currently serve a robust total of approximately 7,000 students, are specifically targeted towards improving overall student performance and attendance.
Efforts to expand educational opportunities
“SWEPCO recognizes how beneficial both programs are, helping thousands of students in the classroom,” said Michael Corbin, External Affairs Manager at SWEPCO. He further added, “We see this as the perfect opportunity and time to assist them in expanding the programs to help even more students.”
Communities in Schools and LightHouse Programs
According to official sources from SWEPCO, the Communities in Schools program centers its efforts on improving three main aspects of the students’ academic life, namely attendance, behavior, and course performance. An encouraging statistic reveals that a notable 78% of students receiving CIS’s services met or progressed towards achieving either an academic, attendance, or behavior goal.
The LightHouse program, on the other hand, ensures students have a strong grasp of their coursework. The program achieves this through offering after-school assistance with homework and enrichment activities.
Significant Impact
“Together, these efforts are making a significant impact in reducing barriers to education and ensuring children stay in school,” stated Carolyn Hammond, president/CEO of Volunteers of America North Louisiana.
Conclusion
This notable initiative by SWEPCO and Volunteers of America North Louisiana reflects corporate social responsibility at its finest, serving as a role model for other organizations to follow. With this significant grant, these program expansions will surely provide new opportunities for thousands of students, fulfilling their ambitions, and ensuring a brighter future for education in Caddo Parish.
