Sponsor Our ArticlesOn a sunny Monday afternoon, President-elect Donald Trump spoke to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, about potential changes in the state’s political landscape. The hot topic of discussion was Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ upcoming decision on who will replace Senator Marco Rubio in the Senate.
During the press conference, Trump was asked whether he thought Governor DeSantis would choose his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, as Senator Rubio’s successor. Trump replied, “No, I don’t. I probably don’t. But I don’t know,” indicating that while he believes Lara would be a good choice, he is unsure of DeSantis’ plans.
Marco Rubio, a well-respected figure in the Republican Party, is set to leave his Senate seat after being nominated by Trump for the role of Secretary of State. Trump described Rubio as a “three-term senator from Florida” with significant roles on the Senate Foreign Relations and Intelligence committees.
Trump did express his support for Lara, who recently stepped down as the co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC). He praised her work and claimed she is “unbelievable” and “incredible,” highlighting her popularity and the numerous opportunities she has been presented with since leaving the RNC.
“Lara got so many other things. I mean she’s got so many other things. People want her to be on television. They want to give her contracts,” Trump noted during the briefing.
Governor DeSantis has stated that he will announce his choice for the Senate seat by early next month. This has left many wondering who he might select as Rubio’s replacement. Although Trump has made it clear that he would like to see Lara Trump in the role, sources close to the situation suggest that DeSantis is likely to choose someone who has held public office in Florida.
“We have already received strong interest from several possible candidates, and we continue to gather names of additional candidates and conduct preliminary vetting,” DeSantis mentioned last month, further lending time to his decision-making process.
Lara Trump has also shown interest in the position, stating in interviews that she would “seriously consider” serving the state in the Senate if given the opportunity. Meanwhile, DeSantis, who once had a close alliance with Trump but faced conflicts during the Republican nomination race, has since reconciled with the former president, even endorsing him and assisting in fundraising during the general election.
During the press conference, DeSantis emphasized the qualifications necessary for a new senator, saying Florida “deserves a senator who will help President Trump deliver on his election mandate, be strong on immigration and border security, and reverse the nation’s fiscal decline.
Once Trump takes office on January 20, the formal confirmation process for Rubio will start. Until then, the anticipation builds around DeSantis’ decision and how it will shape Florida’s political future.
With so much at stake, many will be watching closely to see what direction DeSantis takes regarding this important Senate appointment. The coming weeks will surely be filled with discussions and speculation about who will step into Marco Rubio’s shoes in Washington.
