Leaders across the political spectrum echoed this sentiment. “Obviously, we can’t go on like this as a society,” Speaker Mike Johnson commented. “We’ve got to turn the temperature down in this country. And we need leaders of all parties on both sides to call that out.”

Feeling the Heat Despite Calls for Unity

Democratic efforts to condemn the violence did not resonate widely and comprised less than 2% of posts.

Gun control debates, stimulated by the assassination attempt, made up a small fraction of posts – less than 1% according to the same study. Amidst this divisive backdrop, what’s clear is the need for unity and conversation is essential more now than ever before.
