Ukrainian Musicians and Soldiers Perform Gratitude Concerts in Shreveport This Weekend

Ukrainian Musicians and Soldiers Bring Gratitude to Shreveport

Shreveport, Louisiana, is set to host a remarkable event this weekend that blends the beauty of music with the spirit of gratitude. Ukrainian musicians, who also serve as active-duty soldiers, will be performing two special concerts on Saturday, October 19, and Sunday, October 20, as part of the Cultural Forces’ Second Music Tour of Gratitude to America.

A Musical Journey of Thanks

The first concert will take place at Louisiana State University Shreveport (LSUS) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m., aptly named “From the Ukrainian Front with Thanks.” This event is anticipated to be a heartfelt celebration featuring a mix of classical music, Ukrainian folk tunes, and popular favorites, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Ukraine. On Sunday, the musicians will perform at Caddo Common Park in downtown Shreveport at 3 p.m., followed by a performance by the Shreveport Symphony at 4 p.m. Both concerts are free and open to the public, serving as a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together in support of a noble cause.

Brave Musicians with a Purpose

The group comprises seven talented musicians and three dedicated staff members, all active-duty soldiers who have volunteered to fight for their country. Among them is noted figure skater and Shreveport resident Oksana Baiul, who has passionately shared their mission with the community. “These are trained musicians, male and female, who volunteered to fight,” she explained. This incredible tour expresses their deep gratitude to the United States for the support provided to Ukraine following the country’s invasion by Russia in early 2022.

Showing Gratitude Through Music

“For my friends back home in Ukraine, I want them to know that America is here for them. For us as Ukrainians, we want to show how thankful we are,” Baiul emphasizes, highlighting the importance of this musical journey. The Cultural Forces tour is designed to stretch from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles, making its way across the southern and western parts of the United States.

The Story Behind the Music

The initiative was formed by Mykolai Sierga, a popular television personality and singer in Ukraine, who created the group while serving in an infantry brigade at the outset of the invasion. This is more than just a musical tour; it is a testament to resilience and strength. Notably, some members have faced harrowing experiences during their service, such as opera singer Yurii Ivaskevych, who lost part of his leg in combat yet returned to service after recovery. Another talented musician, violinist Olha Rukavishnikova, lost an eye but has also persevered, displaying incredible guts and artistry as she continues to contribute to her country’s fight.

A Diverse Ensemble of Artists

The group features an eclectic mix of musicians, including two players of the bandura, a traditional 64-string Ukrainian folk instrument, an opera singer, a talented violinist, a pianist, a country singer, and even a poet. Each of these artists brings a unique story and perspective, enriching the concerts with their diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Supporting Ukraine Beyond Music

This awe-inspiring tour would not be possible without support from nonprofits like Razom for Ukraine, an organization dedicated to providing humanitarian and medical aid to those in Ukraine. Their efforts, alongside the courageous performances of these remarkable soldiers, embody a spirit of unity and hope that resonates deeply within the hearts of people everywhere.

Join the Celebration!

Mark your calendars for this weekend in Shreveport! Come out and enjoy the music while showing your support for these brave musicians who have transformed their passion for music into a powerful message of thanks and resilience. Whether you’re a fan of classical music, folk tunes, or simply want to stand in solidarity with Ukraine, this is an event you won’t want to miss.
