SHREVEPORT, La. – The Caddo Commission has declared May as War On Litter month in Caddo Parish, as trash continues to pile up at illegal dumping sites and alongside highways and roads, creating an eyesore for residents.
Residents in the parish have expressed their concerns about the growing trash problem. “I think the trash is getting out of control around here,” said one resident. “I skateboard around and it’s sad to see trash everywhere. I grew up around here and see it get progressively worse.”
The Caddo Commission is calling on businesses and private citizens to come together to beautify the parish and combat littering. Commissioner Ken Epperson emphasized the need for collective effort, stating, “Get with your churches, your boy scouts, your civic organizations and businesses. Let’s put a concerted and consistent effort against litter.”
Illegal dumping sites have been popping up all over the parish, with sofas, tables, kids’ toys, and wood scraps filling area ditches with unwanted trash. To address this issue, cameras may be installed at some of these known sites to deter future dumping.
Shreveport Green Executive Director, Lauren Jones, highlighted the importance of government officials identifying litter as a parish-wide problem to motivate citizens to take action. She mentioned, “If people in government say we need to get on board and pull into the neighborhoods and talk to the community, that’s the best way that we can create change from the top.”
Trash can be seen dotting the streets of the Queensborough neighborhood in Shreveport, where it often goes uncollected for weeks. Commissioner Ken Epperson revealed that most of the calls he receives in his district relate to litter issues.
Commissioner Steffon Jones informed the commission about litter kits available at the Shreve Memorial Library, which residents can check out to organize neighborhood cleanups. These kits come equipped with litter pickers and trash bags, providing residents with the tools needed to take action.
As May is designated as War On Litter month in Caddo Parish, residents are encouraged to take part in community clean-up efforts and actively work towards a cleaner and more beautiful parish. By coming together and tackling litter issues head-on, residents can make a significant impact on improving the overall quality of life in the area.
